A man riding a bus said to a
Christian sitting next to him, "Why, you
have nothing at all to rest your faith on. I can prove to you that your scriptures are wrong."
The humble Christian man replied, "Sir, I am not a learned man. I can't answer your questions, but I believe in Jesus. And I have experienced such a change of character, and I feel such a joy and peace in believing, that I wish you knew my Saviour too."
His seatmate responded, "You've got me there; I can't answer that." As Christians we have a peace that a Christian understands but cannot fully explain. We live a totally new life. A disgruntled former church member once said, "Christianity doesn't make much difference in the life!"
Back came the reply from a true follower of Jesus: "It makes all the difference in the world." The change God performs in the life and emotional makeup of a person who is in Christ is a miracle of grace.
A religious skeptic once said to a Christian, "You read in the Bible about Jesus turning water into wine. But to me that is fiction. I've never seen anything like that taking place today."
The kindly Christian answered, "Well, I haven't seen Jesus turn water into wine, but I have seen Him turn whiskey into furniture. And to me that is an even greater miracle." Transforming the lives of people who are at war with themselves and giving them victory over sin and inner peace is also a miracle of grace.
On the Island of Borneo I saw shrunken heads hanging in the longhouses, a reminder of what the people were before they became Christians. They hunted heads and ate each other.
Things are different now. So different that neighboring villages began calling one Christian village Damai, which means peace. As Christians we have a peace that we understand and reflect but cannot fully explain. "Being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ." It gives us assurance of salvation, an entirely new life of happiness, and the hope of heaven. Why shouldn't our lives be saturated with a peace that passes all understanding, for our peace comes through a living Saviour living in our hearts?
